COURSE INFO PROVIDER: SWSPCP Webinar
COURSE TITLE: Wanha': Where, How, and Why?

INSTRUCTORS Carlos Manuel Burelo Ramos

COURSE DESCRIPTION Abstract:
In this presentation we will discuss the history behind the Wanha' Biosphere Reserve and present the advances in the study of its biodiversity and what is planned for the future in this territory. On the banks of the San Pedro River, the presence of a population of red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) was documented in 2021. These mangroves have a biogeographic history of 125,000 years and are considered the furthest inland mangroves from the coast on the planet, between 120 and 180 km as the crow flies. Today, these mangroves and various vegetation types and their biodiversity are protected within 38,000 ha. The mangroves, and in general the vegetation of the area, have been largely eliminated by agricultural and livestock activities, in addition to the fires that occur every year. Today, the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco and companies committed to the care and rescue of this reserve have produced and planted around 60,000 mangrove plants in community nurseries where the whole community works to care for them. In addition, studies of the reserve's biodiversity are being carried out and talks and workshops on environmental education are being given to students from different educational levels. We hope that at the end of the presentation you will be able to give feedback on our actions and processes to the real wetland specialists who are you, the listeners of this talk.

Speaker's Bio:
Carlos Manuel Burelo Ramos
B.Sc. in Biology (UJAT, 2008), Ph.D. in Science (Systematics, INECOL, 2008)
National Researcher, level 1
Member of the State System of Researchers.
Research Professor T. C.
Lidel of the Inland Mangroves Laboratory
Academic Division of Biological Sciences, Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco.

His work focuses on the development of studies of the flora of Tabasco, mainly in municipalities in the river region (Balancán and Tenosique) as well as in the highlands region (Huimanguillo, Teapa and Tacotalpa). He has developed taxonomic studies in the state with several botanical families: Bignoniaceae, cactaceae, orchidaceae, meliaceae, gesneriaceae. From his scientific work he has published 19 original research articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He participated as author of the article Relict inland mangrove ecosystem reveals Last Interglacial sea levels. This research also revealed that the RSPM mangroves are the most inland (120 to 180 km) and highest elevation mangroves in the world.
