Professional Short Courses

COURSE INFO PROVIDER: Northern Kentucky University Research and Education Field Station
COURSE TITLE: Wetlands Delineation

INSTRUCTORS Jacob Bartley

COURSE DESCRIPTION The NKU REFS Wetland Delineation course covers fundamental training derived from the 1987 Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Manual and the Eastern Mountains and Piedmont (EMP) / Midwest Regional Supplements. All wetland indicators (Hydrology, Vegetation, and Soils) are thoroughly covered both in the classroom and through hands-on field work to support the analytical framework of determining a wetland footprint or non-wetland site.

This course exposes participants to different hydrogeomorphic class wetland sites which include depression, hillslope /seep, lacustrine fringe, and mineral soil flat types. Additionally, participants are exposed to different vegetative modifiers and include emergent, scrub-shrub, and forested wetlands.

This course focuses on the EMP and Midwest Regional Supplements only. Wetland determination data forms and mock wetland delineations in the field are completed as both group and individual exercises. All wetland hydrology field indicators are covered and experienced by participants over the 4-day course and different wetland sites visited. Students participate in vegetative sampling exercises utilizing the appropriate National Wetland Plant Lists (NWPL) and definitions of vegetation strata. Participants will gain knowledge completing the hydrophytic vegetation indicators section in which they learn to conduct the Rapid Test for Hydrophytic Vegetation; Dominance Test worksheet; and the Prevalence Index worksheet. Morphological Adaptations and Problematic Hydrophytic Vegetation are additionally covered. Hydric Soil indicators are covered during the 4-day course in both the classroom and fieldwork. Participants are exposed to those hydric soil indicators in the field at the different wetland sites visited and gain experience in filling out the soil profile descriptions.

An experienced wetland scientist/instructor accompanies and participates with students in all parts of this course. All vegetative field guides, manuals, Regional Supplements, NWPLs, Munsell Soil Color Charts, measuring tapes, flagging, and augur/spades are provided by NKU-REFs for fieldwork. It is optional if participants want to use their personal equipment.

Course Duration: 32
Credit Points: 2.1
